Toto driver brutally murdered in robbery attempt; grieving wife shares ordeal

A toto driver, Kayas Sheikh, was brutally murdered during a robbery attempt in Murshidabad's Berhampore. The 40-year-old driver, a resident of Raimahal in Mollah Gedhar, lost his life after his throat was slashed by a miscreant who attempted to steal his toto.

The attack took place as Kayas Sheikh was driving his toto to the new market area of Berhampore, where the assailant stopped him. In a vicious act, the criminal cut the driver’s throat tube and fled the scene with the stolen toto. Residents quickly responded to the situation, rushing the gravely injured Kayas Sheikh to a nearby hospital. Sadly, despite their efforts, the doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The robber, however, did not get far. While attempting to escape with the stolen toto, the suspect crashed into a lorry at the Uttarpara intersection. This accident caught the attention of another toto driver who recognized the stolen vehicle and confronted the criminal. In the face of mounting suspicion from bystanders, the robber abandoned the toto and fled the scene, evading capture.

The victim’s wife, devastated by the loss, spoke out about the hardships the family faced. “My husband was a disabled man,” she said tearfully. “He couldn’t work during the day, so he drove his toto at night to provide for our family. How will I raise my son and daughter now? We have loans to pay, and I don’t know how we will survive.”

Recalling the events of that night, she added, “When his throat was cut, he called a friend for help. His friend called me, and when I spoke to him, he said, ‘I won’t survive… I’m dying.’ And then it was over.” The criminal responsible for this heinous act is still on the run, and police have launched a manhunt to track him down.
